Iceland Day 8: Whale Watching in Husavik (2017)

We spent the morning and afternoon whale watching out of Husavík, something I had never done before.  I would have considered it a success if we had seen just one whale, but during our 2.5 hours on the water, we saw several humpback whales and an entire pod of orcas, which had a calf with them as well. 

We booked our tour through Gentle Giants, and opted to go with the ‘Big Whale Safari and Puffins’ tour – two and a half hours on a guided speedboat that took us out of the bay into deeper, more open water, as well as to Puffin Island, which was swarming with the funny little birds as they had come to that island from all over to mate.  It cost about $170 per person, which was entirely worth it for me.  This is definitely something you will want to book ahead of time!

Unfortunately, the rest of our day was taken up by an almost 8 hour drive from Husavík to our campground, Tungudalur, a camping card site that left us in good position for the adventures we had planned for the next day.
