Iceland Day 10: Hraunfossar, Barnafoss, Kirkjufellsfoss (2017)

We started our last full day in Iceland by driving 2.5 hours to Kirkjufellsfoss, what is often considered the most photographed place in the entire country – a beautiful waterfall with a vibrant green mountain looming behind it.  Unfortunately for us, this was also the worst weather we had the entire trip, and it was rainy/foggy enough that majority of the mountain was obscured.  It was still worth going to, and the pictures are actually still quite nice, just not the way we expected them to be.

We then drove 2 hours to another set of waterfalls – Hraunfossar and Barnafoss – which share a parking lot and are within walking distance of each other.  Hraunfossar (lava falls) is a long series of short little rivulets of water that trickle down exposed lava into the now familiar deep blue water of the river below.  Barnafoss (children’s waterfall) is almost more river rapids than it is a waterfall.  It’s said that two young children fell off a rock arch that once spanned over the river, after which their mother destroyed the arch.

Day 10 ended with an hour long drive back to the campground at Akranes, taking us full circle to the same place we spent our first night.  If anything was an indicator of just how good our timing was, it was coming back to the same place ten days later – while there were only 4-5 groups staying there on our first night, the site was almost entirely full on our last!
